The unitarian website has a new area here to get people to call in to their senator/housemember about the new welfare reform bill. bush’s plan will take money away from poor people in favor of teaching abstinence only education even though that’s been shown not to work, and is opposed by the American Medical Association, and the National Institutes of Health. It will also do away with the exemption for mothers with children under 1 year of age regarding their requirement to work a 30 hour workweek.
The reform bill will also “encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families,” which i have to say is, i think, the dumbest thing ever. how patronizing is it to make poor people go to classes about marriage, would rich people accept the government forcing them to go to classes about how good marriage is, and how they should get, and stay married? to agree with this you have to believe both that poor people have more of a problem staying married, and that if the government sees people doing some personal choice it does not agree with it should step in a “re-educate” that section of the population until it’s views are inline with policymakers. i’m getting tired of the “bush agenda” or more accurately the “corporations first far-right christians second agenda”
