Trent Lott
This is a very cynical view of what’s happening with Lott. I think it is a probably accurate description of whether Bush & Co. are racist, however I think to not try to remove Lott only because he offers an easy, visible target for racism is questionable.
Sure the next person will be a better liar, and people might not even know that the next-most-racist person is racist at all; but wouldn’t that be an improvement? When you go to clean your bathroom you don’t leave dirt in the tub because it’s easier to remove than dirt behind the toilet in hopes that you can focus on the easier. You clean what you can, as much as you can. Will that mean that the difficulty in what you have left to clean next will increase? Yes it will, but it’s not defeatist misdirection.
