Harry Potter

I did enjoy the book, and was looking forward to what was billed as a much darker Harry Potter. It was darker, but in a way that was mostly not interesting. I think what attracts people to Harry Potter is the sense of magic, exploration, and wonder that caught people’s attention in the books and the first movies, I didn’t feel that in this episode. I would have liked more extravagance I guess, and failing that, at least better costume design.

I think Narnia is very stiff competition, both the book and the movie (I hear), for the Potter franchise. Perhaps in comparison, people realize that you can have the magic, exploration and wonder (and darkness!) plus philosophical depth all in the same movie geared towards younger people. I’ve never thought the Potter movies were especially strong.
