Mobilizing social networks

Terra Nova has an interesting post about how some online social network sites and massive multiplayer games could be a serious political force if they wanted to become one.

MMORPG players are already used to grinding, so why not have the “Write to Senator Clinton and tell her you won’t vote for her if she doesn’t spend the time to learn about video games”-quest? Or tools built into MySpace to write your Representatives and Senators? Facebook in particular, with millions of educated college students, should be able to mobilize the kind of lobby that should terrify both local and national politcos.

It’s pretty interesting. If you got some in-game item that was of any quality in WoW there is a guaranteed multi-million (like 5) letter campaign. Not to mention the actions that would take place if the law was actually understandable to the player base, and, god forbid, in any way limited their play. In that case you might have suicide bombers. Err, I’m sorry, freedom fighters.
