The Internet Is A Meta-City

  • Shattuck and Stix: Has the pace of changing technology made the purpose or meaning of particular cities, or cities in general, different for new generations, or is their essential character as places of concentrated choice something that you think remains relatively constant?
  • William Gibson: The Internet, which I think of as a sort of meta-city, has made it possible for people who don't live in cities to master areas of expertise that previously required residence in a city, but I think it's still a faith in concentrated choice that drives migration to cities.

Pirate Bay

It’s a race to turn a relatively benign symbiote (the original Napster, which offered to pay for its downloads if it could get a license) into vicious, antibiotic resistant bacteria that’s dedicated to their destruction.
Exactly, from boingboing. Freenet is ready to go, people just need the motivation.

Weather in London

Well, this is pretty funny. The weather in London, is an article, well, a soft redirect to a section. This was an example of a crazy article in the past that would never exist, but hey, we do have a climate section on London, so… Steve Summit in the mailing lists suggests it’s the end of an era.

Wikileaks

I hope this gets resolved. Wikileaks has real potential, in my opinion more than anything else using mediawiki other than Wikipedia itself. I poked around their site a little, I wonder how many people decide on what gets posted. Obviously there are some things you can take a stand on, and some that are just illegal. I hope they make good decisions.

New Computer!

I got a new computer yay! It is super fun.

I’ve also decided there is no point in arguing with people about anything, religion politics whatever. They choose to believe those things because it makes them happy, and it doesn’t matter anyway. It’s like christianity, except without god or heaven.

Cans of Air

If you do not have any canned air, you are missing out. it cleans between keyboards like a champ!

On another topic, my brother and kim are leaving back to abilene tomorrow, and monday I start my job. I was thinking today about the amount of time i spend online reading non-random sites (as in a list i read every day) and it’s really a lot. like 2 hours every 12 hours. When i work 8 hours a day that will be a problem. I mean it’s not all i do now, and i want to have time to do other things. maybe i will make cutbacks in my individual blog reading… although there are some good finds there. i wonder what other people do.

(what i really want is a sidekick, mmm)
